Leeds Conservatoire is a leading conservatoire, boasting the oldest Jazz course in Europe and plays a huge part in the richness of the Leeds music scene. They’re hosting a special event showcasing this year’s leading bands as they emerge onto the circuit.

Artists performing across the day include:

12.00 – 12.45: The Cameron Byrom Quintet

The Cameron Byrom Quintet - A modern jazz project started by a Swiss/South-African drummer, Cameron Byrom. The group play tunes written by some of the greats such as Chick Corea, Pat Metheny, and Mike Stern to name a few, but are even starting write their own tunes. As well as Cameron, the line-up consists of David Bullock on Bass, Joel Kew on Guitar, Joseph Frost-Tesfaye on Keys and Matthew Middleton on Alto Saxophone.

13.15 - 14.00: Theo Hayes and Teruki Chan


14.30 – 15.15: Tribus

Tribus is a contemporary jazz trio that balances being forward-looking and progressive with still upholding the jazz tradition. Repertoire consists of original tunes, plus the odd standard arrangement, all being used as the basis for intense improvisation, rhythmic interplay, and textural experimentation.


16.00 – 16.45: Eleni Olympiou Band

Eléni Olympiou is a vocalist, performer and songwriter from Cyprus, based in Leeds. She is currently studying Jazz with Pop Vocals Performance at Leeds Conservatoire with this year being her final one. She was a finalist of The Voice of Greece 2021, managing to be in the final four! Eléni has done many gigs in Cyprus as well as in Leeds, playing with several musicians and choosing to sing both covers and originals. She is now preparing to release her debut single. Her genre of music is mainly soul and blues, but she also loves to sing popular and rock music. Her powerful voice, passionate singing and the emotion she puts in everything she sings is what characterizes her the most. She is now working with some of the big names in Greece and she is planning to get straight into the music industry very soon.


17.15 – 18.00: Maeve Thorpe Quartet

The Maeve Thorpe Quartet play a blend of contemporary jazz and ECM. They take inspiration from some of jazz’s current leading players, the likes of Joshua Redman, Brad Meldhau and Bill Stewart. The band is made up of Gustavo Andrade on tenor saxophone, Ben Gilbert on piano, Fergus Leach on bass and Maeve Thorpe on drums. 

 
18.30 – 19.15: Fireside

Fireside is a Leeds based 7-piece contemporary jazz band taking influence from soul & funk. Think artists such as Kamasi Washington, Alfa Mist, Nate Smith. Their carefully crafted compositions explore soundscapes using rich texture and varied harmony, while keeping improvisation at the heart of the music. The frontline features a unique blend of saxophone and vocals.


19.45 – 20.30: Peter Kormendi Trio

The Peter Kormendi trio focused on the music of Hungarian folk, combined with jazz. The trio will feature a guest, Gaspar Telegdi who is a folk accordion player from Hungary. This project is about songs that everyone knows in Hungary. Peter is trying to popularise them internationally. His biggest influences on the project are Bela Bartok, Tigran Hamasyan, Chick Corea. Peter is a pianist who combines these styles to create exciting and unique music, bringing the tradition of both worlds together in the classic trio format


21.00 - 21.45: India Newland Project

India Newland is a 21-year-old, scruffy, queer, skater and hiphop artist based in London. When her studies at Leeds Conservatoire suddenly came to a halt during lockdown, India found solace in listening to jazz-influenced, 90s US Hiphop and rap. She quickly began to produce her own beats and couldn't ignore a need to write and perform raps herself. This led to a sold out debut supporting MDVLNS at Hyde Park Book Club, and several guest appearances with Leeds’ jazz locals Plantfood.


22.15 - 23.00: Elusive Dip 

Elusive Dip are a 5-piece electronic jazz fusion ensemble based in Leeds featuring heavy hitting grooves and an unforgettable chaotic energy. They are made up of saxophonist Gustavo Andrade, guitarist Conor Thomas, bassist Fergus Leach, drummer Haydn Morrow and keys player Ruben Maric. Combining Jazz, Electronica and Hip-hop, you can hear influences from contemporaries such as BADBADNOTGOOD, Moses Boyd, Nubya Garcia, The Comet is Coming and Athletic Progression in their music. Since the forming of the band in 2020, Elusive Dip have supported bands such as Pyjaen as well as performing numerous other gigs in the exciting Leeds jazz scene.
