James Mainwaring Meditations Vol. 1B w/ Emil Karlsen and Ben Eyes
Meditations Vol. 1B explores melodic concepts for improvisation on saxophone, samples and modular synths accompanied by field recordings, drones, live drums, and audio reactive visuals. Alongside James the band features drummer Emil Karlsen and modular synthesist/visual artist Ben Eyes.
James Mainwaring is a saxophonist, composer and improvisor known for his work with Roller Trio (Mercury Prize nominees 2012), Tipping Point, and Mycorrhiza. He has performed/recorded with John Law’s Congregation, Django Django, Nduduzo Makathini, Dave Kane, Matthew Bourne, Space Fight, Morten Schantz and Sean Foran to name a few. Based in Leeds UK, he is a tutor at Leeds Conservatoire and has a PhD in Composition/Improvisation from the University of York.
Ghost House
Ghost House is abrasive and gripping music, led by the erratic performances of drummer and producer Jonathan Lodder. Focusing on free expression and being able to make anything he wants, often working from improvisation, Jonathan creates music that is raw, aggressive and to the point. Ghost House has featured a plethora of musicians from the UK, and will continue to as Jonathan composes and creates.
Ghost House’s debut collection of music is “COLLABORATIVE WORKS I” . Jonathan is working alongside a different artist each month for a year and creating a set of music with each one, in the form of EPs, remixes, videos and live performances. Ranging from free jazz to black metal and from spoken word to improvised visual arts - “COLLABORATIVE WORKS I” is a celebration of Jonathan’s time in Leeds, and the musical scene he has been welcomed into.
Herbie Hopkins (Conduction)
Herbie Hopkins is an improviser, composer, and performer in his final year at Leeds Conservatoire. He is particularly inspired by artists like Bjork and alt-Hip Hop trio ‘Young Fathers’, to use the voice’s full range of textures and dynamics. He explores this in his improvisations and compositions by pairing vivid lyrical imagery with varied and passionate vocal performances, often using multiple vocalists.
Renowned improviser and drummer, Mark Sanders, described Herbie’s improvised conduction at The Hepworth Wakefield as “adventurous and daring” with “wonderful ideas and a fearless understanding of how to develop them.”
Watch out for Herbie’s debut album and a collaboration with Leeds City Gallery inspired by artist Sonia Boyce, both due later this year.
Wharf Chambers is a members club. Please ensure you sign up for membership, or you are the guest of a member who is also in attendance. It’s £2 for the year and you can register in advance or at the bar at Wharf Chambers
